German import regulations

The Federal Republic of Germany fully supports open markets and the liberalization of international trade. Since Germany is a memberstate of the European Union (EU), some types of imports to Germany are regulated.

There are only three main areas of trade which are restricted by the import law of Germany:

  • those products which are regulated by the European Union
  • the imports of certain types of products where quotas apply
  • those imports which might create a hazard or health risk The German Customs Administration is responsible for the compliance of the German import laws.
